Hemming a circle skirt can sometimes be a bit tricky but using bias tape can be an easy solution. Since bias tape is cut on the bias it will easily stretch around curves, leaving you with a professional looking finish. Plus it adds a fun pop of color when your little one is twirling in her new skirt.
The easiest method is to use store bought bias tape, however today I am going to show you how to make your own using the newest Riley Blake Designs collection, Sleep Tight.
Fold the strip of bias tape in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Open the strip and fold both sides in to meet at the middle seam. Press well.
Before adding the bias tape to your skirt be sure to trim your seam allowance to equal half the width of the bias tape. Next open up the bias tape and with right sides together, pin the long edge of the bias tape to the raw edge of the skirt.
Once you have gone all the way around your skirt and you reach the starting side of the bias tape, fold over one end by ½” and trim the other end of the bias tape so that it overlaps the folded edge by 1”. Sew around the skirt using the crease closest to the raw edge as your guide.
Working from the wrong side of the skirt, fold the bias tape up and press. Topstitch around the skirt, 1/8” away from the folded bias tape edge.
I hope this quick and easy tutorial comes in handy the next time you need to hem a circle skirt.
