A Little Holiday Gift for You: Free Linen Gift Bag Pattern

A Little Holiday Gift for You: Free Linen Gift Bag Pattern

Hello Sewing Friends! It’s Tamar from Tamar Hope Designs here to bring you a free pattern for the holidays!!! Handmade holidays have a special place in my heart. They give us a chance to slow down and put thought and intention into every gift and detail in our homes. It is such a meaningful way to show our loved ones that we really care about them! So, today I’m excited to bring you a little gift! This free linen gift bag pattern will add that special little touch to your gift giving this year! This pattern comes in three sizes. A tiny bag for the smallest of gifts or for a sachet filled with delicious spices and dried fruits, a medium bag for small gifts, and a large bag for the bigger gifts.

It is really a very quick, easy, and satisfying sew. You can punch out a bunch of these in one afternoon.  So, let’s get to it!

Supplies:

  • Fabric scraps or fat quarters or half yard cuts (linen makes these bags extra special.  I used Art Gallery Linen for this tutorial, and it is wonderful! This lovely print is called Falling in Love Sun)
  • Matching thread
  • Ribbon or drawstring

Sew:

Finish the long edges of the rectangular piece.

Press ¼ inch to the wrong side of the fabric on both short ends of your rectangle.

Fold short end to short end right sides together. Make a mark 4 inches down from the short end. Sew along the sides from the fold up to the mark using a ½ inch seam allowance.

Press the seam allowance open. Continue pressing along the unsewn portion.

Fold each short end down to the mark, pin or clip in place.

Fold one flap back to keep it out of the way. Edge stitch along the bottom of the flap. Stitch again ⅜” from the first row of stitches to create a casing for the ribbon. Note: ⅜” is perfect for a narrow ribbon. If you want to use a wider ribbon or a drawstring, sew your second row of stitches ½” or ¾” away from the first row depending on the width of your drawstring. Repeat with the other flap.

OPTIONAL STEP: If you want a squared bottom, press the bag to create a crease along the bottom of the bag. Match the crease with the side seam and pin to prevent shifting.

Using a clear ruler, mark a 2 inch long line perpendicular to the side seam. This is your stitch line.

Draw a second line ¼ inch from the first line.

Cut along the outside line and stitch along the stitch line.

Repeat with the opposite corner and finish the seams.

Turn the bag right side out. Thread your ribbon or drawstring through one opening, all the way around the bag and back to the starting point.

Thread your second ribbon starting from the opposite side of the bag, all the way around the bag and back to the starting point.

Knot the ends of your ribbon or drawstring together and fill the bag with goodies!

This little bag is sure to be a showstopper under the tree this year!

Happy Holiday Sewing and Have a wonderful Christmas!!!
