Hello sewing friends! It’s Tamar from Tamar Hope Designs! Who else is ready for some summer sewing!? I love making fun summer outfits for the kids, and Clove is perfect for all the summer staples! I have made many Clove sets and decided to hack the pattern this time to make some capris! I’ll show you how in this post. It’s super easy!
Cut
Cut your pieces out. For the capris, cut the shorts and lengthen them to the inseam that you desire. The easiest way to determine the inseam for your capris is to measure your model and determine the length that hits your model in the calf area. If you don’t have your model with you, a good rule of thumb is adding 4-6 inches to the shorts length. 4 inches for the smaller sizes and 6 inches for the larger sizes.
For the optional ruching ribbon, cut a casing 3 inches wide and 10 inches tall for the larger sizes and 7 inches tall for the smaller sizes.

Sewing
If sewing the ruching version, prepare the casing by folding the raw edges over ¼” and pressing. Sew the two short edges down.
Begin sewing the capris following the directions for the shorts in the tutorial. Sew the side seam in step 33 and open up the piece pressing the seam to the back. Press the hem allowance in place creating a memory crease.

Center the casing over the side seam placing the bottom short edge just above the hem. Sew along the two long edges of the casing. Sew one seam down the center of the casing following the capris’ side seam. Be sure to backstitch on both ends of the casing seams.

Finish the capris following the remainder of the tutorial.
Take a length of ribbon and thread it up one side of the casing and down the other side. Gather the fabric the desired amount and tie the ribbon.

And that’s all there is to it! Now you have another cute option to make this pattern even more versatile!
The fabric used in this tutorial is from Becca Plymale’s newest fabric collection with Art Gallery Fabrics called Gulf Breeze. It is really a stunning collection! You should totally check it out. I used the Tropical Bloom cotton for the capris.

And for the applique, I used Sandy Strolls cotton. I just love the little footprints on this one!!

This collection also includes ribbon!!! I’m not gonna lie, the only reason I decided to add the ruched side-seams was so I could use this amazing ribbon! It’s so cute!!

Happy Summer Sewing!!!
