Quilted Cinnamon Stocking {A Tutorial}

Quilted Cinnamon Stocking {A Tutorial}

Since the kids are getting the cutest Cinnamon Animal stockings this year I thought it would also be fun for my husband and I to get matching stockings as well. With so many scraps left over from the others, I wanted to find a fun way to use them up and still have matching Christmas stockings. Today, I will be teaching you two different ways to quilt a Cinnamon stocking using up your scrap pieces of fabrics.

Half Square Patchwork Stocking Tutorial

This project uses a 1/4" seam allowances for the HST blocks

Supplies, Fabrics, and Notions:

  • Cinnamon Stocking Pattern
  • 56 assorted fabric squares measuring 4" x 4" (This is a perfect scrap buster project). I used Indy Bloom's Winterberry collection.

Creating the Patchwork

Step One: Layer two 4" squares, right sides together. Mark a center diagonal line on the fabric (shown in black below).

Step Two: Stitch a scant 1/4" from each side of the center marking.

Step Three: Cut along the diagonal line. Press the seam open and trim the corners from the square. Continue this step until all squares have been created.

Step Four: Arrange half-square triangles in rows of four. Layer two blocks together, right sides together. Sew along one edge. Press the seam allowance open.

Step Five: Continue attaching blocks until you have a row of four.

Step Six: Arrange rows. You will have a total of seven rows for the front and seven for the back. Layer two rows together, right sides together. Sew the top long edge. Press seams open. Continue this step until all rows have been attached.

Step Seven: Place the stocking main pattern piece over and trim off access.

Step Eight: Continue per the pattern instructions.

Fabric Strips Stocking Tutorial

This project uses a 1/4" seam allowances for the fabric strips.

Supplies, Fabrics, and Notions:

  • Cinnamon Stocking Pattern
  • 24 assorted fabric strips measuring 2.5" x 15" (This is a perfect scrap buster project). I used Indy Bloom's Winterberry collection.

Creating the Strips

Step One: Layer to strips, right sides together. Sew along one long edge.

Step Two: Press the seams open.

Step Three: Continue piecing strips together until you have attached all twelve strips together.

Step Four: Place the stocking main pattern piece over and trim off access.

Step Five: Continue sewing per Cinnamon pattern instructions.

This month's sew along pattern is Cinnamon and we'd love if you joined us in The Sunflower Social group on Facebook. Kristen will have some great tips and tricks as she walks you through sewing a Cinnamon stocking just in time for Christmas. They are perfect for hanging by the chimney with care or even as a fun and festive way to wrap your gifts.

Happy Sewing!
